Brief
At first glance the Genleo site seems to be an ordinary text based game. Upon entering the site however you are confronted by excellent graphics from what you would expect of any other text based game. The controls are fairly easy to use, allowing almost anyone with basic knowledge of gaming to play it. A single link labelled 'Visit Carvahall' provides easy access to the city in which you start and the city itself has descriptive links that allow a player to easily figure out how to play the game.
Graphics
Although the overall graphics are extraordinary and the controls are easy to use, the graphics in the cities themselves fail to immerse me in the fictional world the owner has created. The links for each separate part of the cities, whilst being clear and greatly helping new players, are merely words upon a black background. The owner however has somewhat made up for this. In each area of the game there is highly descriptive text telling you what you should be seeing which goes a long way in drawing you into the game world.
Details
Another thing that I found rather unique about Genleo is the sheer amount of detail that has gone into making a text based game highly addictive. For instance, there are many different ways of making money in the game, fishing, killing monsters, farming, trading, and keeping pastures of animals. And with each of these ways of making gold, there are variations on how you go about doing it. With fishing you can fish in deeper water to get less fish but of a rarer type, or fish in shallower water to get more fish but of a common variety. You can gain more or less money when killing monsters depending on which gems you have in your weapons. With farming there are different things you can farm. And so on with every other trade. This variation I believe is what makes the money making part of the game not boring, unlike in many other games of the same type. The thing that intrigued me most however was the fighting part of the game. In Genleo there are many different types of weapons, and many different types and sizes of gems. Depending on what you put into your weapon and how many gems you put in greatly affects how you play and what you can do, which gives a player a great amount of choice when it comes to fighting in the game.
Staff
One of the things that really helped me in this game are the players and staff themselves. In games like these I believe the players help make the game what it is, and on Genleo, they do not disappoint. Most of the players are friendly and helpful, with the few troublemakers being suitably dealt with by members of the staff team. The chat system itself helped with this. Apart from the 'main chat' there is also a 'noob chat' where new players can go to ask questions, so that main chat is not cluttered with new players complaining that they need money. I found this extremely efficient and I applaud whoever thought of the separate chat idea.
Closing Remarks
Overall I think this game may surprise many players. Most would expect a rather normal text based game, but the graphics draw a person in and the content keeps them there. What could have been a disaster if made incorrectly has been created brilliantly. So much so in fact, that most people would be hard pressed to not be addicted to it. It is a game that you will start and not wish to stop playing for many years to come.
